Oil-Air Lubrication (e.g. for rolling mills)

REBS Oil-Air Lubrication

A central lubrication system should:
  • provide an ideal lubricating film between the moving bearing surface,
  • achieve a reduction of the temperature inside the bearing,
  • not generate additional temperature due to over-lubrication and
  • prevent entry of cooling water or other contaminants into the bearing.
Trouble free use in cases where extreme conditions exist:
  • high thermal loads (e.g. rolling mills, continuous casting plants and cooling beds)
  • high RPM and peripheral speeds (e.g. roller guides)
  • dust, water or harmful gases (e.g. chemical industry or roll grinding machines
The principle of the Oil-Air Lubrication System

A pump feeds the oil directly, or via a progressive distributor to a mixer block that is connected to the compressed air supply system. In the mixer block, oil and compressed air are metered and distributed to several oil-air lines. Inside the oil-air lines, under the influence of the compressed air, a continuous oil film is gradually formed from the impulse-fed oil. This film moves in streaks along the inner line of the oil-air line to the point of friction or seal. There, the oil is detached from the pipe inner wall or feed passage by the air pressure. The friction points are lubricated, cooled by the compressed air and at the same time, entry of contaminants into the bearing or seal is prevented. The oil-air mixture is capable of penetrating the air vortex formed around the bearing by the centrifugal force at the high RPM involved.

Advantages of the REBS Oil-Air Lubrication System with TURBOLUB distributors

  • Low lubricant consumption Reduction of lubricant quantity to 1/100 of that required with grease lubrication
  • The system pays for itself in the shortest possible time
  • Bearings are sealed by pressurization
  • Prolonged anti-friction bearing life
  • Significant reduction in disposal and maintenance costs No cleaning of anti-friction bearings to remove grease during bearing inspection
  • Fresh oil lubrication no contamination of chocks and water by grease
  • Precise metering of oil and air, as well as monitoring of all mechanical components, pipes and connections
  • Small pipe diameter (6, 8, 10, 12 mm)
  • No over-lubrication
Satellite TURBOLUB Rolling Mill Lubrication

An example for the use of a Satellite System is a wire rod mill fitted with TURBOLUB lubrication system. In this way, even widely distant plant sections can be supplied by one lubrication system.

The main unit with PLC control maintains an oil pressure of 80-100 bar when the lubrication points have to be lubricated. The satellite stations (SAT) are supplied with fresh oil from this unit.

These SAT stations can now operate independently from each other. A SAT station normally contains a progressive distributor with proximity switch, the air treatment unit and the oil-air mixer with monitor.

Additional SAT stations can be added if the plant is expanded.

TURBOLUB Lubrication for Continuous Casting Plant

In most cases, only a single oil-air connection is necessary per segment of a continuous casting plant. Accurate distribution of the oil-air mixture to the lubrication points is carried out by the TURBOLUB distributors. Wear-free TURBOLUB-BLOCK distributors without moving parts and withstanding extreme heat, are mounted on the segments.

A SAT version of the system is possible, for example in the case of multiple-strand plants.

The lubrication system can be fitted with a monitor for all the connections and mechanical components.

TURBOLUB Rolling Mill Lubrication

The rolling mill is fitted with TURBOLUB assy sets and connection rods as option. All the lubrication points can be supplied via one connection per set. The connection rod as an option also enables the TURBOLUB assy sets on drive side to be supplied. We recommend to monitor the proper fit of coupled connections.

The size of the oil-air main station is determined by the size of the system to be supplied with lubricant.
